Whistlestop Bookshop

129 W High St Carlisle

See the route.

Whistlestop is an independent bookshop with hand-picked selections and eclectic sidelines that is designed to surprise and please its patrons.

Whistlestop Bookshop is one of the oldest retail shops in downtown Carlisle, having opened in 1985.  It has weathered the storm of big book retailers and survived while many other small-town, independent bookstores have not, most likely due to their intensive and attentive customer service that chain stores and online retailers lack.  The literary and historical expertise you'll find in owner Jeff Wood can hardly be found elsewhere.  Not sure what book to read on a subject, Whistlestop will steer you in the right direction.  If you want a book they don't have, Whistlestop will track it down and get it in store for you.

Adding to the charm of the shop is bookstore cat, Mulan, who greets customers from among the stacks and shelves.  Whistlestop also carries greeting cards, journals, small gifts, literary apparel, seasonal items, local honey, and often has .25 book sales outside on the sidewalk.  They feature local authors, have book talks and readings, and do special orders glady.  Event space, private events, and off-site events are available as well as online shopping.  It's definitely a must-see stop in downtown Carlisle!
